Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, Metric’s Jimmy Shaw and the members of Mexican indie rock band Chikita Violenta played an acoustic show together in a bar in Mexico City’s la Condesa for a privileged few.
The place is called Pata Negra, a quiet cozy bar in one of Mexico City’s most alternative and culturally rich zones. With a limited capacity of less than 200 persons (the show was held on the second floor), each of the involved artists announced the gig in a very subtle manner There were very discrete invitations on each one of their myspace or web pages and just like that, on December 3rd at 8:00 p.m. the place was packed.
Chikita Violenta which by the way may translate to something like "violent baby girl", recorded their sophomore album with the help of producer Dave Newfeld who has worked with bands like: Broken Social Scene, Apostle Hustle, Super Furry Animals and Los Campesinos. They met him through the internet and began communicating via email, eventually the band left for Toronto to record The Stars and Suns Sessions, named after the Dave’s studio. Some members of the Broken Social Scene participated in few tracks and this is how they met and developed a relationship.
On a trip to Mexico, Kevin and Jimmy while having lunch with their new friends of Chikita Violenta came up with the idea to do a free acoustic show on Monday night. The place, Pata Negra, was chosen by the local band (being the most experienced in Mexico’s night life). So they booked the place and everything was set.
At first, the show consisted only of Kevin and Jimmy playing some Spirit If... songs and some classic (well new classic or new indie classic) Broken Social Scene like Superconnected, Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day) and Cause = Time and finally all of them together played some jam styled songs which will supposedly be a part of the new Kevin Drew album. The Toronto performers where pleased with the warmness and gratitude of the audience and Kevin even said that he would be back next year for a full-scale show.
It's quite refreshing to know that artists like Kevin Drew or Jimmy Shaw are hanging with other foreign musicians like Luis Arce, Armando David, Eduardo Pacheco, Esteban Suarez and Andrés Velasco of Chikita Violenta and are working together involving their fans, making new music and most importantly creating a global white canvas for new or unknown artists and musicians.
