Indie Heroes Pavement Reunite

Underground Superstars To Play First Shows Since 1999

Sep 20, 2009 Brandon Schultz

Since their breakup at the end of the 90's, numerous rumors of a reunion of the band have circulated for years; confirmed by the band itself, this time it's for real.

On the morning of September 15th, 2009, music blogs began running a story that many music fans have been waiting for for a decade: independent music icons Pavement would be reuniting.

For those not in the know, Pavement was a seminal independent rock band from Stockton, California. Their debut album, Slanted & Enchanted, is considered one of the greatest albums of the 90's. Regardless of critical acclaim, they remained mostly unknown up until their demise in 1999. Singer/songwriter Stephen Malkmus has released a number of albums since then, as a solo act and with backing band the Jicks. Bassist Mark Ibold is now in Sonic Youth.

As of right now there are only 4 shows planned, all of which will be taking place in Central Park on September the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of 2010. Although band reunions oftentimes include a full scale tour (and in lesser cases, an album), Pavement made very clear that the odds of the band continuing after said tour would be highly unlikely. The official post on label Matador's blog made sure to include this line: "Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion."

Another influential independent of the early 90's, the Pixies, had a very successful reunion tour in 2004. After reuniting in 2005, Dinosaur Jr have released two critically acclaimed albums and are a popular live draw. Given the speed that tickets are currently selling for the Central Park shows, Pavement look like they could do just as well, if not better. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, member Scott Kannberg mentioned that the band is currently talking to music festival Coachella. If that's true, their first date on their tour would likely be the festival, which is in April.

The Pavement Split

Pavement's last show, which took place at Brixton Academy in London on November 20, 1999, wasn't exactly the most easiest of break-ups. During the show, Malkmus had a pair of handcuffs chained to his mic stand, which he explained to the crowd that "These symbolize what it's like being in a band all these years." At an after-party, he let people know that the show they just played would be their last. A couple weeks later, their British label Domino Records confirmed that the band had retired.

Time apart has certainly eased the tension between band members. Since everyone in the group has continued with other music projects, there shouldn't be an issue with the band being rusty. Sold out shows should be expected at all venues. Good luck to ticket seekers; you're going to need it.
